Opponents say
Opponents say this is not a bill that should be passed because these students are in the United States illegally and should not be rewarded for that. These funds should go towards American citizens or people who are in this country legally.
Proponents say
The bill's sponsor Rep. Ruben Hinojosa (D-TX-15th) states that not only is an education a vitally important tool for young to people to succeed in our nation, but also points out that the people who would benefit from this legislation were brought into this country illegally through no fault of their own as children. He argues that it is unfair to punish them for an action they were not responsible for by making it more difficult for them to obtain a college education.
