Reporting on the relationship between the U.S. and Taiwan every two years?

This bill Became Law
Bill Summary

The Taiwan Assurance Implementation Act requires the State Department to review and report to Congress on its guidance to federal agencies regarding the U.S.-Taiwan relationship every two years, rather than as a one-time review. Reports must explain how the guidance reflects Congress’s view that Taiwan is governed through free and fair elections and operates as a representative government, and they must identify opportunities to ease self-imposed restrictions on U.S.-Taiwan interactions. Sponsor: Rep. Ann Wagner (Republican, Missouri, District 2)

Proponents say

•    "The world is on fire, and the People’s Republic of China has made it clear they have their sights set on exerting even more power over Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific.  The United States stands with Taiwan, and we will not allow China to destabilize the world even more than they already have. My Taiwan Assurance Implementation Act asserts American superiority at a critical time in history and is a strong step forward in our unwavering support for Taiwan as they push back against the CCP aggression and influence campaigns. This law strengthens our own national security and will help us prevent China from expanding their dangerous foothold in the region and globally." Source: Rep. Ann Wagner (Republican, Missouri, District 2)

•    "America’s diplomatic guidance must be able to keep up with the ever-evolving threat China poses to the Indo-Pacific, including our friend and ally Taiwan. Our legislation will reinstate a strong Taiwan strategy at the State Department at a time when we need it most, and I’m glad it is now the law of the land thanks to President Trump." Source: Sen. John Cornyn (Republican, Texas)

•    "When I traveled to Taiwan earlier this year, I saw firsthand its importance for securing a free and open Indo-Pacific. With the passage of the Taiwan Assurance Implementation Act, Congress has reaffirmed its longstanding commitment to a strong United States-Taiwan partnership. This legislation will strengthen our shared values and reinforce stability across the region. I’m proud to see this bill become a reality." Source: Sen. Chris Coons (Democrat, Delaware)
