Opponents say

•      "Mr. Speaker, I strongly object to this censure resolution which does not include a single quote from Representative Ilhan Omar (MN-05) and seeks to punish her for comments she never said.  After the unconscionable act of gun violence that took the life of Charlie Kirk, Representative Omar clearly and immediately condemned this assassination. She expressed her profound shock, sadness, grief about this despicable act of political violence. She expressed sympathy and empathy for Mr. Kirk’s wife and young daughters who are enduring unimaginable pain and sorrow. Sadly, Republicans are misleading Americans and deliberately using this resolution to further divide Democrats and Republicans at a time when all Americans need to come together to condemn acts of political violence, which are becoming all too commonplace in our nation. " Source: Rep. Betty McCollum (Democrat, Minnesota, District 4)

•         "Ilhan Omar’s comments regarding the assassination of Charlie Kirk are vile and contemptible. They deserve the harshest criticism of every man and woman of good will. But this disgusting and hateful speech is still speech and is protected by our First Amendment. Censure is formal punishment by the House and we have already gone too far down this road.  Omar’s comments were not made in the House and even if they were, they broke no House rules. A free society depends on tolerating ALL speech - even hateful speech - confident that the best way to sort good from evil is to put the two side by side and trust the people to know the difference. Congress exists for this purpose. For this reason, I voted to table the censure resolution. " Source: Rep. Tom McClintock (Republican, California, District 5)

Proponents say

•     "Ilhan Omar has shown us exactly who she is: someone who defends political violence and refuses to condemn the loss of innocent lives when it doesn’t suit her agenda, even the cold-blooded assassination of Charlie Kirk,” said Congresswoman Mace. “If you mock a political assassination and celebrate murder, you don’t get to keep your committee seat, you get consequences."
