Abolish the Department of Education and repeal all programs under its authority?

Awaiting Vote
Bill Summary

The States’ Education Reclamation Act eliminates the Department of Education (DE) and repeals any program under its authority. From FY2025 to FY2033, the Department of the Treasury must give states replacement education grants equal to current funding levels, minus the funding provided for programs that the bill transfers to other agencies. States must conduct annual audits of grant spending, and several DE programs are reassigned to other federal agencies. Finally, the Government Accountability Office must assess whether federal education grants could be eliminated and whether successor agencies can manage the transferred programs. Sponsor: Rep. David Rouzer (Republican, North Carolina, District 7)

Opponents say

•     "Since the enactment of the Department of Education, there have been consistent attempts by far right-wing Republicans in Congress [to eliminate the Department]. The last one as recently as March 24, 2023. Mr. Massie offered an amendment to H.R. 5 to abolish the Department of Education. That measure was defeated 265 to 161, 60 Republicans voted, in my opinion, sensibly to make sure that the Department of Education stayed in place. I think it is important for us to remember a reality check that the Department of Education’s existence actually resides in this branch of government." Source: Rep. Joe Courtney (Democrat, Connecticut, District 2)

•      "For far too many students, especially at the intersection of race, poverty, and disability, the promise of quality education has not been realized. In defending the role of the Department, CLE does not defend maintaining the status quo for students across the nation. But gutting the federal agency tasked with protecting and advancing that promise is not the solution to the learning crisis happening for millions of children. The solution lies in a relentless commitment to quality and accountability, set by the Department in its priorities and investments, and modeled by all stakeholders in our education ecosystem." Proponents say

•    "I’ve introduced the States’ Education Reclamation Act in each Congress since I was first elected. Education should be handled at the state and local level without interference from the Federal government. This bill takes the funding appropriated to the Department of Education and gets it back to the states to use for teacher pay increases, new schools and/or whatever each individual state needs to enhance education."
