Opponents say

•    "However, the fears of propaganda and threats to national security are largely unfounded. Some worry that politicians’ high-profile of targeting of the Confucius Institute program could stigmatize other Chinese language and culture programs and get in the way of Americans learning more about and fostering ties with the world’s most populous nation and America’s geopolitical rival. Reports from the U.S. Government Accountability Office, Congress’ nonpartisan investigative arm, have shown that Confucius Institutes often require academic freedom for affiliated scholars through contract provisions and that American institute directors had full control over the programs." •    "Foreign influence has not posed a threat to K-12 classrooms. Confucius Classrooms, which are affiliated with Confucius Institutes, are centers for Chinese culture and language established at public and private elementary and secondary schools. Many countries around the world lack quality Chinese language and culture resources and Confucius Institutes and Classrooms provide those resources for free." Proponents say

•    "Chinese Communist Party (CCP) malign influence in our schools and universities cannot continue unchecked. Our children are our most precious resource, we must protect them from CCP-funded influence. With President Trump’s strong leadership, America is finally standing up to the CCP’s malign influence and putting America’s children first. The PROTECT Our Kids Act will halt the flow of CCP money and propaganda into our K-12 schools – we can’t pass it soon enough!" Source: Rep. Kevin Hern (Republican, Oklahoma)

•    "Education should empower free thought, not serve as a vehicle for foreign propaganda. Confucius Classrooms, funded and influenced by the Chinese Communist Party, compromise academic independence under the guise of cultural exchange. As a cosponsor of the PROTECT Our Kids Act and a former teacher, I believe is past time to halt CCP influence in our schools." Source: Rep. Kevin Kiley (Republican, California)
