Should Congress guarantee uninterrupted SNAP benefits for FY2026?
The Keep SNAP Funded Act ensures that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) continues to operate uninterrupted if Congress has not yet passed full-year or temporary funding for the Department of Agriculture (USDA) for FY2026. It authorizes retroactive payment for any SNAP benefits missed after September 30, 2025, up until the bill takes effect. These temporary appropriations remain in place until Congress enacts regular FY2026 funding for USDA.

Proponents say
• "No person or family in America should go hungry because of the government shutdown. The simplest solution is for the government to be reopened immediately, but short of that, we must pass legislation that will provide relief for the people who need it the most." Source: Rep. Kevin Kiley (Republican, California, District 3)
• "SNAP keeps families stable during difficult times by ensuring they can buy groceries and put food on the dinner table. It’s not a distant policy; it’s our neighbors’ lifeline, with one in eight Americans depending on it. That’s why I co-sponsored the Keep SNAP Funded Act. This bill ensures that benefits continue and Miami families don’t lose vital support during the shutdown. Food should never be used as a political weapon." Source: Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (Republican, Florida, District 27)
