Should Congress condemn the June 2025 LA protests in response to ICE?
H.Res. 516 condemns the violent June 2025 riots in Los Angeles, California. Protests began in response to United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) presence in LA, and escalated, involving law enforcement and federal agents. The House recognizes the right to assemble and peacefully protest, but condemns the violence perpetrated against government officials.

• "We can do two things at one time. We can condemn protests that get out of control, and we can acknowledge that Donald Trump has no interest in standing up to violent protesters. He pardoned every single violent protester that tried to attack our Capitol and destroy our democracy. The fact of the matter is, Donald Trump is not looking to create peace. He's not looking to calm the situation. He's looking for a fight. Local and state government officials in the city of Los Angeles and the state of California have said they don’t need federal help with holding protesters that have engaged in violence or property destruction accountable." • "The Trump administration’s authoritarian crackdown is nothing more than political theater - an attempt to sow chaos and create false justifications for deploying armed troops into American neighborhoods. They want to destabilize communities and tear families apart. President Trump’s takeover of the California National Guard and deployment of 2,000 soldiers into Los Angeles was a deliberate move to escalate tensions when local law enforcement had stated they did not require assistance. Our immigration system is in crisis. The border is out of control, but that does not mean we abandon the rule of law. The Trump administration continues to deny due process rights and ignore the Constitution." Source: Rep. Rosa DeLauro (Democrat, Connecticut, District 3)
• "Los Angeles is my home. And like so many Americans, I am appalled at what we are witnessing on the streets of our city. Deploying the National Guard is a dangerous escalation meant to provoke chaos. In addition to the recent ICE raids in Southern California and across our nation, it is part of the Trump Administration’s cruel, calculated agenda to spread panic and division. This Administration’s actions are not about public safety - they are about stoking fear. Fear of a community demanding dignity and due process. Protest is a powerful tool - essential in the fight for justice. And as the LAPD, Mayor, and Governor have noted, demonstrations in defense of our immigrant neighbors have been overwhelmingly peaceful. I continue to support the millions of Americans who are standing up to protect our most fundamental rights and freedoms." Source: Kamala Harris, Former Vice President of the United States

• "I support the First Amendment right to peacefully protest, but the violence and vandalism happening in Los Angeles is unacceptable. Standing for law and order should be common sense, and ICE should continue to prioritize the removal of known criminals from our country. With this resolution, California Republicans urge Governor Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass to condemn the chaos and work with the administration to restore peace to our streets." Source: Rep. David Valadao (Republican, California, District 21)
