Should federal funding be withheld from universities that support DEI initiatives?
H.R. 8708 prohibits federal funding for institutions of higher education that carry out diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. This includes any programs, offices, or activities that advocate, promote, or support DEI. Institutions must certify that they do not engage in DEI initiatives to remain eligible for federal funds, including participation in federal student loan programs. The bill allows for appeals if funding is terminated and provides the Secretary of Education the authority to regulate and enforce the act.

• "Many colleges and universities share a common belief, borne of experience, that diversity in their student bodies, faculties, and staff is important for them to fulfill their primary mission: providing a high-quality education. The public is entitled to know why these institutions believe so strongly that racial and ethnic diversity should be one factor among the many considered in admissions. The reasons include: Diversity enriches the educational experience…It promotes personal growth-and a healthy society… it encourages critical thinking; and it helps students learn to communicate effectively with people of varied backgrounds. Diversity on college campuses is not achieved through quotas. The diversity we seek and the future of the nation do require that colleges and universities continue to be able to reach out and make a conscious effort to build healthy and diverse learning environments that are appropriate for their missions. The success of higher education and the strength of our democracy depend on it." Source: American Council on Education
• "Businesses are clamoring for a diverse workforce. We need students who have cultural competency and are comfortable learning and working in diverse environments. Our universities need to reflect our increasingly diverse country and teach their students to thrive in environments where not everyone looks the same. Universities are some of the best-placed institutions to do that work. DEI isn’t about pushing some political agenda, it’s about helping our institutions achieve their own stated goals of access and inclusion, and to help prepare the next generation of global citizens and leaders." • "By nationalizing Florida’s law, we can ensure that students around the country have access to a high-quality education without facing indoctrination or having woke ideology thrust upon them. All students will still be able to exercise their First Amendment rights on campus, but their institutions will no longer be allowed to force their leadership’s views upon students and faculty. Additionally, American taxpayers will not be forced to support ideologies that are out-of-line with their values and belief systems" Source: Rep. Gus Bilirakis (Republican, Florida, District 12)
