Should Congress denounce the Biden Administration’s immigration actions at the US-Mexico border?

This bill has Passed the House of Representatives
Bill Summary

The resolution criticizes the Biden administration’s handling of immigration at the US-Mexico border, alleging that the administration has enacted an “open borders policy” with excessive approval of refugees to enter the country and a termination of asylum cooperative agreements, and criticizes the administration’s lack of compliance with immigration law. It also criticizes the administration’s elimination of Migrant Protection Protocols also known as the “Remain in Mexico” program. It similarly accuses the Administration of overusing parole. The resolution encourages the administration to abide by detention regulations, increase and facilitate removals, and end catch-and-release policies. Sponsor: Rep. Tony Gonzales (Republican, Texas, District 23)

Opponents say

•      "For months, the Biden Administration has been asking Congress to deliver much-needed resources to ensure the safe, humane processing of refugees and asylum-seekers. During that same time, Speaker Johnson repeatedly refused to engage with Senate Democrats, Senate Republicans, and the White House to negotiate bipartisan legislation to tackle the crisis at our border head-on—going as far as to pronounce the deal they struck as ‘dead on arrival’ in the House, refusing to even allow us to debate the measure, [...]These reports are a direct result of House Republicans’ inaction, and Speaker Johnson’s refusal to engage on the subject at all. The safety of our communities, and the lives of refugees seeking safe-haven in this country, are being put at risk because of these political games. Enough is enough." Source: Rep. Lou Correa (Democrat, California, District 46)

•      "We are a nation of immigrants, welcoming people of all faiths and backgrounds. Unfortunately, our current immigration system is not living up to these basic ideals. To bring our fundamentally broken, outdated immigration system into the 21st century, we must implement comprehensive reform. We must provide a road map so that undocumented workers can earn legalized status and citizenship, reduce backlogs and allow families to be reunited, let undocumented kids brought here years ago have the same opportunities as everyone else, and let businesses, including those in the high-technology sector, attract and retain workers from abroad when domestic talent is not available. Comprehensive reform also must include improvements to secure our borders and remove from this country undocumented immigrants who have committed serious crimes after they serve their sentences." Source: Rep. Eric Swalwell (Democrat, California, District 13)

Proponents say

•      "The issue that many of us in the House Republican side have, is this massive catch-and-release that is occurring, [...] Somebody can enter our country illegally, they can be processed, and they can immediately be released into the country, and in some cases, they get work visas. [...] The administration is rewarding those who do it the wrong way, that are breaking our laws, and they are punishing those who are trying to apply for work visas, that are trying to enter the United States legally." Source: Rep. Tony Gonzales (Republican, Texas, District 23).

•      "President Biden and his team are absolutely lying to the American people when he says he hasn’t the authority to shut the border now. Section 212 (f) of Title 8 of the U.S. Code allows the President to act to secure the border. The U.S. Supreme Court noted that this provision “exudes” deference to the President to enact measures to secure our borders. President Trump gave us the most secure border in my lifetime. Biden issued 94 executive orders to undo that secure border! President Biden should stop with the word salad lectures and admonitions for others to read bills he has neither read nor understood. He should enforce the laws we have in place to secure the border. No more rambling speeches, just focused action." Source: Rep. Andy Biggs (Republican, Arizona, District 5)
