Should Congress vote to restrict immigration benefits for facilitators of Hamas?

This bill has Passed the House of Representatives
Bill Summary

The No Immigration Benefits for Hamas Terrorists Act seeks to restrict immigration for anyone involved in the October 7th, 2023 attacks. These restrictions apply to any non-US citizen who participated, aided, financed, or generally facilitated the attacks against Israel to be carried out. Additionally, the bill would make anyone who falls under the above category ineligible for any relief under immigration laws. Sponsor: Rep. Tom McClintock (Republican, California, District 5)

Opponents say

•      "Today the majority has put forward a legislation with a worthy goal: ensuring that no one involved with the planning or Commission of the October 7th attacks can enter the United States or receive any immigration benefits. However, such individuals are already barred from entry and cannot receive any immigration status. Hamas has been a designated terrorist organization by the US department since 1997 under Section 212 a3b of the immigration nationality act" Source: Rep. Jerrold Nadler (Democrat, New York, District 12)

•      "This is a largely symbolic piece of legislation, and that’s fine we do a fair amount of that here [House Judiciary Committee], but we’ve got two really big pieces of legislation pending before the house that are not symbolic. One is military aid to Israel and the other is humanitarian aid to Gaza, they’ve been sitting around here in the house for weeks now and I think we should stop sitting on them" Source: Rep. Glenn Ivey (Democrat, Maryland, District 4)

Proponents say

•      "[The Bill] provides that any alien who carried out, participated in, planned, financed, afforded material support to, or otherwise facilitated any of the attacks against Israel initiated by Hamas beginning on October 7, 2023 be inadmissible for citizenship and be ineligible for any relief under immigration law. It is imperative that Congress ensures that these bad actors will find no refuge in the United States" Source: Rep. Tom McClintock (Republican, California, District 5)

•      "I rise in support of the legislation but I would be remiss to let this opportunity go by with nothing having been said about the ongoing offensive in Gaza which has now led to the deaths of 23+ thousand plus Gazans, 70% of whom are women and children (they have to be innocent if they are women and children) and many men who are innocent have been killed. Gaza is being leveled and the 2.3 million people who live in a 25 square mile area, about the size of my home county. 2.3 million people living there are subjected to a blockade and land barriers that prevent them from leaving and the only thing they can do is dwell there while the bombing continues. No safe place left for them to dwell." Source: Rep. Hank Johnson (Democrat, Georgia, District 4)
