Should the House open an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden?

This bill has Passed the House of Representatives
Bill Summary

H. Res. 918 would authorize the opening of an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden, either for an alleged failure to successfully reduce immigration or for various alleged corrupt acts involving his son Hunter and Ukrainian officials. Although no evidence of a crime has been found, the opening of an impeachment inquiry would give committees additional power to subpoena information. An inquiry is not the same as an impeachment, merely an investigation. It is also important to note that the opening of a full impeachment inquiry does not necessarily require a majority vote and may be opened regardless of the results of this resolution. Sponsor: Rep. Kelly Armstrong (Republican, North Dakota)

How do you feel?

You can still save your opinion to your scorecard, but since the vote has already taken place, your opinion won't be sent to your lawmakers.

Opponents say

•      "[House Republicans] have nothing to show for their narrow, fading and decreasing majority -- nothing. They want to hide their extreme right-wing agenda from the American people. And that's why we continue to see censure resolution after censure resolution being brought to the floor. And next week, we're going to waste time on an illegitimate impeachment inquiry targeting President Biden and his family." Source: Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (Democrat, New York, District 8), House Minority Leader

•      "I don't see any evidence of [high crimes and misdemeanors] at all. I think before you begin an impeachment inquiry, you ought to have some evidence, some inclination that there's been wrongdoing. And so far, there's nothing of that nature that's been provided… If I were in the House, I'd vote against it unless they were able to bring forward evidence that suggested there were (sic) a high crime or misdemeanor that had been committed. But so far, that hasn't been the case. Look – look, fortunately for most people, we're not responsible for the misdeeds of our kids, and grandkids, and great-grandkids. Nothing in my family I'm embarrassed about, but President Trump’s – excuse me President Biden's son, Hunter, has obviously been a very unsavory person and has had some extremely damaged personal foibles, including a drug habit and so forth. That's not President Biden. And we're not going to impeach someone because of the sins of their kids." Source: Sen. Mitt Romney (Republican, Utah)

•      "Chairman Comer cannot even identify what crime he thinks President Biden has committed. This is what we have assembled from House Republicans’ ten-month investigation: more than 37,000 pages of subpoenaed private bank records, more than 2,000 pages of suspicious activity reports (SARs) made available by Treasury, more than 20,000 pages of emails regarding Hunter Biden released by the National Archives, with more than 62,000 additional pages being produced in the next few days, and dozens of hours of witness testimony from Hunter Biden’s business associates, then-Vice President Biden’s former financial adviser, and nine witnesses from agencies across the Administration, including the FBI, IRS, DOJ, and National Archives. All of it shows no misconduct by President Biden. We also know that Hunter Biden has offered to testify and answer the Committee’s questions, under oath and in public, for as long as the Committee seeks to go.  But, embarrassingly, Chairman Comer refuses to take yes for an answer." Source: Rep. Jamie Raskin (Democrat, Maryland, District 8)

Proponents say

•      "But make no mistake: financial records, emails, text messages, and witness testimony reveal that the Biden family enterprise is centered on Joe Biden’s political career and connections. Joe Biden knew about, participated, and benefitted from these schemes. This is a national security threat at the highest level of government and Americans demand accountability for the Bidens’ corruption… No one is above the law – even if your last name is Biden… Democrats should have no concerns with first deposing and interviewing key witnesses. This is how they conducted their Impeachment Inquiry of former President Trump and the January 6th Committee. President Biden’s pattern of lies, corruption, and obstruction demand action from Congress. We will continue to follow the facts and hold President Biden accountable to the American people." Source: Rep. James Comer (Republican, Kentucky, District 1), chair of the House Oversight Committee and lead official of the impeachment inquiry

•      "Based upon the overwhelming facts uncovered by our House Committees through our Congressional oversight responsibility, I fully support the impeachment inquiry into President Biden. This inquiry will allow us to unearth documents and records that the Administration has previously shielded and offer us a larger platform to deliver those facts directly to the American people. Barring declarations of war, impeachment is the most awesome power Congress holds, and we will undertake this great responsibility with a strict fidelity to the truth. It is time to get to work." Source: Rep. Mike Johnson (Republican, Louisiana, District 4), Speaker of the House

•      "We must hold Joe Biden accountable for selling out the American people through a series of shady foreign business deals involving his official government office. Bank records and extensive evidence show that the Biden family received $20 million in cash, diamonds, and sports cars from various countries, including China, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Romania. Joe Biden was directly involved in this foreign influence-peddling scheme, and even boasted on camera that he wanted a Ukrainian prosecutor who was investigating his family’s corrupt dealings fired in exchange for $1 billion in US taxpayer funds. Joe Biden made numerous phone calls to his son related to his family’s business deals with a Chinese energy tycoon. When Hunter Biden demanded $5 million in cash from a Chinese official, he wrote to him, ‘I am sitting here with my father and we would like to understand why the commitment made has not been fulfilled…I am sitting here waiting for the call with my father.’ Hunter Biden even flew on Air Force Two to China with then-Vice President Joe Biden to meet with his Chinese business partner."
