Should Michelle Lujan Grisham be condemned for temporarily banning guns in Bernalillo County?

Awaiting Vote
Bill Summary

H. Res. 684 would issue a formal condemnation against Michelle Lujan Grisham, the Governor of New Mexico, in response to her recent public health order temporarily banning the public carry of guns in Bernalillo County. After the total ban was blocked in federal court, Lujan Grisham narrowed her ban to only include public parks and playgrounds. While a formal Congressional condemnation sends a message of disapproval, it does not carry with it any legal consequences and is thus largely a performative action.

Opponents say

•    "I refuse to be resigned to the status quo. As governor, I see the pain of families who lost their loved ones to gun violence every single day, and I will never stop fighting to prevent other families from enduring these tragedies… Over the past four days, I’ve seen more attention on resolving the crisis of gun violence than I have in the past four years. Now is the time to bring clarity of purpose: New Mexicans must again feel safe walking home from school, driving to the grocery store, or leaving their hometown baseball stadium. Who will stand up to protect families and children? I will. And I call on leaders across the state, from local law enforcement to the Legislature to mayors and county commissioners. Stand with me to enact solutions that save people’s lives. Throwing up our hands is not an option." Source: Michelle Lujan Grisham, subject of the condemnation and signatory of the initial ban

•    "Thank you, Gov. Lujan Grisham for declaring a public health emergency in response to the out-of-control gun violence we are suffering in Albuquerque… How many deaths will it take before we decide that our children’s civil right to live free from the fear of gun violence becomes more important than gun rights?... As I tuck my youngest, a 5-year-old, into bed tonight, I will be thinking of Galilea Samaniego and others in our community who have been forever lost to gun violence and the children who are still in clear and present danger. Ask any 5-year-old what a reasonable solution to gun violence would be and they will give you a common sense answer. We must demand an end to this madness." Proponents say

•    "The shocking move from Governor Grisham is a blatant subversion of the U.S. Constitution and a violation of her oath of office while she deprives the citizens of New Mexico of their right to bear arms. The Governor’s action should send a chill up every American’s spine as it strips away the protection of individual rights and freedom, which sets a dangerous precedent for the rights of Central Washingtonians and Americans across our nation. I’m proud to lead this resolution to condemn the Governor's actions and I call on her to rescind her order immediately." Source: Rep. Dan Newhouse (Republican, Washington, District 4), sponsor of the resolution

•    "My job is to keep the peace and to make sure that the citizens of Bernalillo County are safe and I do not believe that this order will help me do so. I’m a law enforcement professional. This order will not do anything to curb gun violence other than punish law abiding citizens for their constitutional right to self defense. It is quite irritating for me to see how this 30-day ban completely overshadowed the robust conversations that we had with the governor in the office on what we’re going to do to curb gun violence and for people to stop being victims. We had arguments, but again we had solutions." Source: John Allen, Bernalillo County Sheriff

•    "I support gun safety but there is no such thing as a state public health emergency exception to the U.S. Constitution." Source: David Hogg, gun control activist and school shooting survivor
