Should Congress prohibit the sale or other disposition of any firearm and ammunition to previously convicted persons?
This bill would prohibit the sale or any disposition of firearms and ammunition to anyone convicted of a violent misdemeanor crime for five years. 22 states and the District of Columbia have this ban in place but convicted people can obtain firearms in the remaining states. Opponents say
• "These actions could require Americans to surrender lawful property, push states to expand confiscation orders, and put a gun control lobbyist to head ATF. Biden is dismantling the 2nd Amendment." Source: NRA
• "The Neguse bill is presumably going to be dependent on state law definitions of crimes, and state definitions vary widely. Some are tightly written, and some are so broad that the Neguse bill could prohibit the exercise of constitutional rights by people for very minor misconduct." Proponents say
• "Every day, gun violence continues to devastate communities across our country, including here in Colorado. From Columbine to Aurora, and Colorado Springs to Boulder, countless Coloradans know all too well the pain of gun violence and devasting mass shootings. We must do more to save lives and prevent these tragedies from happening again. That is why I am proud to introduce this package of common-sense legislation - which will help us build safer communities across our state and country" Source: Rep. Neguse, Joe (Democrat, Colorado, District 10)
• "State laws prohibiting gun sales to these type of individuals do not protect innocent people in other states who don’t have strict gun laws. Federal legislation is absolutely necessary." Source: Margie Leiker, Denver 7
